Is she looking to set up a mysmart.ie email address?
http://www.smarttelecom.ie/support.html and there's 2 links near the bottom of the menu on the left hand side

I think she's been through that process but it's not working. The windows mail wizard is not going through either. Does she have to use my.smart.ie?

Can she log into the webmail?
Is she trying to set up a mail application like Outlook to send/receive mail?

Thanks again for your replies. She logged onto Hotmail, filled in her details and now is up and running with a Hotmail address.

She can access her Hotmail through Outlook Express if she wants.

Yep, you can using something like FreePOPs

But surely this thread has lost it's original purpose?
Why is it that a SMART customer can not setup their email account?
Why should you subscribe to a Broadband service with email access & then have to use a third party source?
These are the real questions that need to be addressed.

think you had to enter mail admin using your user account details then once inside you created the email.
if your hotmail account was a few years old chances are you could use outlook express, without using freepops, but all newer ones need freepop

Thanks newgrange I will pass that on. Speaking of which I tried to open my Google email account through Outlook. I followed all the steps but it never worked. Sometimes when on a website I try to email a page or link but am advised that the the email programme I am on is not the default programme. Can't remember the exact words.

Right click the Start button
Choose "Properties"
Click on the "Customise" button
Then choose "Outlook" as the default email client from the drop dow box list.
Click OK and OK again.
That will set Outlook as your default email client.

you have to go into gmail and enable it to be redirected to a pop server, once you do this you should retreive gmail
