View Full Version : Wireless router stopped working

I was using a Linksys WAG354G router/adsl modem for two weeks with Smartbroad and everything was working fine. Last week the adsl connection dropped for the first time but it came back by power cycling the router. However the following day it went down again and I could not get it back. I assumed the Linksys box was dead so I put back on the Aolynk router which worked. However I got a replacement brand new WAG354G today and it's behaving the same way? The link light just keeps blinking and it never brings up a connection.

Just wondering if there were any changes made recently that might have caused this

See attachment for status screen.

as noted in the announcements some work was done in churchfield last wednesday afternoon which may have affected your connection

at that point you were upgraded to an adsl2+ card but, if anything, this should have improved your service quality.

your line quality looks excellent from our end and you appear to be connected, i take it this is with your aolynk?

Thanks very much for the super fast response. Yes, I'm currently using the Aolynk to connect but I will connect the Linksys box now and leave it for the rest of the afternoon.

As far as I know my settings are correct as it worked flawlessly for two weeks before stopping. I didn't make any changes and now it's a new WAG354G using the same backup config file as before.

I'm on the Quaker Rd exchange btw. My phone number is in my profile if you need it.

Much obliged!

Ok, I've just connected the Linksys again and this time it connected immediately. No changes on my side so thanks a lot if you changed something :)

Hi guys

I'm having problems connecting to Smart as well with a Linksys WAG354G. Thought I may as well post in this thread given the equipment involved. I will start a new thread if you want me to though.

I can access the gateway no problem and I have input the settings mentioned above. I can't connect to the internet though so there must be a setting wrong. I tried the Aolynk modem again and there was no problem connecting so it's not a line issue.

A couple of questions then:
Does the QoS type setting matter?
Do I need to input a host name and domain name?

Beyond this there are some advanced settings and I've tinkered with them but to no avail.

Any ideas opus?

Hi Bushman ,

There is only one setting left which i missed last time , If there is any option for Ip address type so choose one of the following
"Dynamic" or "ISP Assigned" or "DHCP Assigned" .

If you still have problem in connecting by using third party modem / Router just give quick ring to technical support for that modem / Router tell them you have Settings from your ISP . Give them settings they will guide if there will be any other setting recquired.

Let us know if you need further assistance please .
Many thanks :)

See below for details. Only thing to note is that I am not using DHCP on my local network. Didn't have to do anything special to get it going although as I mentioned above, it stopped working for some reason for a period.

Thanks for that opus and rana - still no joy though. Opus just wondering where do you specify the DNS servers in your setup (with DHCP disabled)?

I think I'll have to get onto Linksys.

The Linksys box gets them via DHCP from Smart but I have to put them in manually on each PC connected as I don't use DHCP on the internal network.

Don't know if it would help but I've the latest firmware for the WAG354G (Firmware Version : 1.01.05, Aug 25 2005) installed as well. It's ~3.4Mb zipped so if you PM me your email address I can send it onto you if that isn't too big for an email. However it worked with the slightly older version as well.

Decided to bring the modem/router back - the store had one more left in stock so gave it a go and it worked first time. The equipment was probably bum to start with.

Cheers for the help.

Hi,

I also bought WAG354G and I seem to have simmilar ptoblems with connecting to Smart. When I first connected it on Friday there was no problem. It worked till yesterday when it lost connection. I was trying to reconnect for couple of hours with no success. This morning though I connected straight away.

What do you think the problem might be?

It is possible that the problem is Smart so dont discount that - as there have been various connection problems recently - however it does seem that routers are very very unpredictable beasts and it can be very hard to diagnose exactly what is the problem with them.

Hi Tom,

I checked on Smart server , you are currently connected to our server sucessfully.Attaching the connecting time for your modem to our server.
You still connected on our server.

User access time : 2005/12/21 07:16:28
Accounting start time : 2005/12/21 07:16:28

However if you cant browse internet that could be some other issue.
I will recommend you couple of steps to try and let me know the results so that i will be able to direct you further.
Go in dos prompt
Click start go to run type in there cmd for windows Xp , Windows 2000
or command for windows 98 or windows ME

in dos prompts

ipconfig
note down ip address and default gateway.
2ndly
ping 192.168.1.1
note down packets recieved = ?

3rd step
ping www.smarttelecom.ie
packets recieved = ?

ping 82.195.152.252
packets recieved = ?

post all these results i will let u know for issue.

Thanks
Regards,
Rana :)

I am also trying to connect via this router. Should I also be using the Aolynk? What is the best set up? I want to use this router with 2 wireless enabled laptops.

Thanks in advance for the help with the settings :)
