I have recently subscribed to Broadband and but have been having difficulties since I tried to install it onto another laptop.

I followed the manual provided and used the cd software however the only connection to the broadband network I now have on the 2nd laptop is via the USB port. This is using quite literally using all the computer resources or at least making it unbearable to use.

Basically I had installed (don't ask me how?? seemed to appear out of nowhere) the HAEWEUI IGD ( not sure about spelling) Network and could see it on the first computer in network places when using the network cable, however I have recently gotten rid of that computer and tried to install the broadband onto the next computer. This is a DELL Inspron 510m.

The problems are that now when I try to connect the Network cable there is no response from the computer other than 'connected to Network at 100Mbs' which I know is not a sucessfull connection to the proper network becauase on the other laptop it said 2.3Mbs.

I am nearly positive this is just an IP address issue however when I attempt to click the 'Repair Connection' it says something along the lines of either contact system admin, and check ip settings.

When I attempt to check TCP/IP settings it will not allow me to and tells me to 'install and enable a network card'. This has me truley stumped as the settings show it is enabled, the computer is wireless enabled and can connect to Networks and the internal network card says it is active (The X p sp2 laptop is running on mains so not problem with power saver).

I have had no problems connecting to the internet Via USB but that is just not worth the wait in the slightest and uses up all memory so you can see the need for connecting via the Network cable.

What makes matters complicated is that I do not know whether it is a problem at my end or is it a security measure to prevent other people from accessing my connection to the network or 'piggybacking' as I have heard in other forums?

This is my first time actually setting up an internet connection so.....

I had this problem before - I think the USB uses the IP address "192.168.1.2" by default, but some network cards (well, mine anyway) try to use this IP address in DHCP mode. Obviously, it can't if the USB has been set to use this and quite often will come up with an IP address like "169.xxx.xxx.xxx" for the NIC, which won't work (Is this the IP your NIC is getting?)

The way I got around it, was to manually set the IP address on the Network Card itself:
1. Go to Start > Network Connections (if Network Connections is not an option, then Start > Control Panel > Network Connections). You should get a screen something similar to this:

2. Right click on the Network Card which you use (should be named "LAN" or "Local Area Connection" or similar). Select Properties, and in the dialog box that appears, choose "Internet Protocols TCP/IP" and click the Properties button. A dialog box (similar to one in screenshot below) should appear. Set both options to "Use the following..." and put in the settings I have below (these settings should work, otherwise, find out the IP address of your USB connection and use this instead).

Hopefully this should get you up and running. :)
