Sounds like trouble.
A good rule of thumb is only download things you go looking for. If it pops up - its usually bad.

Strange, I'v been having the very same problem the last few days. However I just ran a full virus check, and found a virus W32.Alcra.C which after it looking up, found it it is meant to give up pop ups asking you to download file.
So I guess a good thing for you to do now, is run a virus check. Good luck

Just get Firefox (www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) and the AdBlock (http://adblockplus.org/en/) extension and it will save you from nearly every pop up there is.

the google bar is also handy as it has a built in pop up blocker too.

i never download software that Im asked to download online, i may google the software and decide its worth it, but installing directly is a big no no, its quite easy to take an appilcation, ie SpyAssasin(not sure if it exists but its a made up example) rip it apart and install a nice handy trojan or spyware package so when you download it you think its legit when in fact its basically an "infected package".
always download from reputable sites directly, or a trusted mirror dont click a popup and download, its rarely safe and usually leads to complications.
