Hello,

My girlfriend got contacted today by NewTel (http://www.newtel.ie/) which apparently is an Irish owned company (since 1999) as i read on their website. Looks like they were looking for me and offering to snatch my current contract with Smart and move to them with a nearly similar price.

I am slightly upset, first because i appeared in the Yellow Pages this year and i didn't know it was going to happen and as an effect, i am getting more and more commercial calls to interest me in freaking spam ... That's not the point of my post but just thought i'd get that one off my chest too :(

It sounds that the man from newtel was quite stubborn and wanted to "save us from Smart's bankrupt" (that's a quote by the way). Their shity website (some people got to learn about stylish, simple yet elegant websites, especially when you see they used DreamWeaver to do it ...) advertises to move from Smart for free ...

I wish I'd have had that call to tell him to shove his offer up ... (replace by your favorite sentence here). I'd like to thank Smart for their great service and hope I'll be a Smart customer for years to come :)

I cant say I've ever heard of this company Newtel before. Having glanced at their site, it looks like a cheap 10 minute job, and they don't seem to have a real phone number or address, only a 1800 number and a PO box. I'd be careful, theres probably a lot of dodgy people out there to take advantage of the smart / eircom situation.

See I've got no intention to move to them but definitly wanted to warn people about them ...

I've never heard of them either, but they do appear on the ComReg list of service providers, but of course so does eircom.....

I had a TalkTalk (http://www.talktalk.ie) rep coming to my house last night trying to sign me up in a very pushy way for his 29.95 Euro package. He was trying to get the information to sign me up against my will as we were talking! (e.g. you see I just need your name and house number here and blablablablabla)

I asked him if there was broadband included in his offer, and he said yes.
I asked for the speed, he said "something like 3MB I think".
I asked about download caps, contention, etc... He didn't have a clue.
I asked if their lines were Eircom's lines, he said yes, all lines in Ireland are Eircom's line. He obviously had never heard of unbundled lines and I had to explain what they are.
Also when I mentioned the fact that I am a Smart customer and very happy with them, and am not considering to switch to any other provider, he said that Smart is going bankrupt because they owe a lot of money to Eircom and Eircom is not going to let them continue their business.
Another completely misinformed guy who wanted to reach his sales targets.

What really annoyed me about it is that when I actually checked on their website today, there is no mention of broadband at all, and the only internet service they offer is dial-up!!!
I had asked him if he was sure about broadband, as it was not mentioned at all on his offer sheet, and he confirmed it was included!!!!!
Now that I think about it, I am not sure he knew what broadband actually is. He probably thought it is another name for internet connection or so...

Lucky enough I would not sign up for something when I haven't got all the details about the offer (not to mention the fact that I don't want to switch from Smart), but someone more gullible would easily sign up, especially after the kind of "Smart is going to close down you'd better change now!" scary talk!!!
So one thing is sure, I will not switch to them.
Watch out if they come to your house!
