Default IP range?

Hi, just trying to clear something up...

Are all Smart Telecom domestic addresses (the blah.blah.mysmart.ie ones) allocated to numeric IP addresses in the 84.203.0.* ... 84.203.127.* range? Or are there significant chunks outside that? I gather that (some) business customers get fixed ranges in the "upper half" of 84.203.*

(I ask because it seems Wikipedia is blocking that whole range, and I'm curious if it affects everyone, or just a small proportion.)

Regards,
Tiger.

I don't have an issue accessing Wikipedia at the moment and have a 84.203.0.* address

I assume you're logged in, Pizzahead. It's a "soft" block, of anon editing and account creation, not a "hard" block of everything.

(But thanks for the data point on your IP addy. Anyone *not* in that range?)

Hi, yes

I had just gone to the site and browsed a few pages with success as you didn't specify that you had problems creating an account etc. in your original post

I tried to create an account and I get the error

Cannot create account
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So I wonder is this something the Admins should follow up with Wikipedia????

Yes, sorry about that, "blocked" was a little lacking in specificity.

It's only for (what's left of) a week, so there's probably not much point in asking for official followup from Smart's end, unless it happens again. Plus Wikipedia might just say they "had to" do it, and it's within their rights to do so on a private site, yadda-yadda.

I might query it on Wikipedia: if they're (anon and account-creation) blocking whole ISPs at a time, just to deal with single users, it seems a little out of proportion.

Rangeblocked again, this time for two weeks.

I don't suppose that repeatedly wikivandalising WP is against ST's AUP, by any chance? If someone'd sort out the langer that's doing this, that'd be handy...

if you can find the page that got the range blocked, I'll look at it.
There's not much info on:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?...&ip=84.203.0.0

Yup, that's the block, all right. (Link to first block is here, and to the latest one, is here.)

There's some discussion of this here, here, and here.

I can't tell you exactly which IP addresses in the Smart range were used for individual pieces of vandalism, unfortunately: the tools don't seem to let one scan the whole range at once. I'll ask the blocking WP-admin if she can provide more information; if there are privacy issues involved, it may be that it would be better if you contacted her directly to ask for that.

Here's one such example. If I find anything more recent, I'll point you to those, instead.
